TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started in 1984 as a four- day conference in California, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. Today, TED covers almost all topics by speakers from all disciplines and cultures. From science to business to global issues, TED is covered by over 100 languages, leaving footprint all over the world. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman. TED is driven by one simple goal: to make great ideas accessible to all.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self- organised events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised (Subject to certain rules and regulations).
TEDxAwka is a full-day conference slated to hold on the 5th of October 2019, with around 11 live speakers; Curated from thought leaders in the South-East, as well as grassroots speakers sharing their inspiring stories. Operating Under Official License from TED, Although TEDxAwka is licensed by TED, we are an independently organized event. We want to bring visionaries, innovators, problem solvers, doers, funders, connectors, and their community into one space. We want to expose them to brilliant ideas and create an environment where ideas will find momentum and positive change that can push boundaries and reinvent our local society will be birthed. This is our dream for TEDxAwka. And we want you to be part of it.
ABOUT OUR THEME: CHANGING THE NARRATIVE
Narratives embody fundamental assumptions by which we interpret and understand the world. Right now dominant public narratives about peace, security, the Igbo tribe and the state of the nation are setting us up to lose.
We chose ” Changing the Narrative” as our theme, because we intend to understand stories that makeup our existing narratives and to change these narratives through the stories our speakers from diverse backgrounds are going to share. It is our mission to shift the mindsets of the Anambra youths to think in line with the fast paced nature of global systems.
